The Artistic work as a practice and business

The Art of Start Up is an effort  that focuses on the development of the artist’s business

The reality of most graduates from artistic educations is a work-life where they are self-employed: They are going to manage an independent business – either alone or with others. They must meet a range of regulatory requirements e.g. the requirement to register their business with CVR. no. when they have a turnover of over 50.000 DK. – which corresponds to approx. 4.000 DK per month before tax.

For many, it can be a challenge to think of the artistic work holistically: as something that must function as both artistic practise and artistic activity.

During the education, we can help the students to see and develop the connection between their practice and business. For a business that is not deeply rooted in artistic ground, it will hardly be a sustainable work and vice versa. Therefore, the ENTRE program offers presentations to all educators, where we will review the overall issues related to the infrastructure of the artistic work. The Art of Start Up is also offered as a course at the Schools.

The Art of Start Up is held by Pernille Skov. Pernille is the director of the art schools’ joint knowledge centre CAKI, where she has worked for the past 10 years to strengthen the knowledge base for entrepreneurship in art educations. She is also a consultant in a number of career programs, including the State Art fund program ‘The young artistic elite’. Pernille runs her own business and is continuously involved in various projects with cultural entrepreneurship.
