Artistic practice as enterprise

The Art of Start Up is a course that focuses on building and running the artist’s business.

The reality for the majority of graduates from the art schools is that they will have a working life as self-employed: they will run an independent business – either alone or together with others. They are also met with a number of legal requirements, e.g. the requirement to register their company with a CVR number, once they have a turnover of more than 50,000 – i.e. what corresponds to approx. DKK 4,000 per month before tax.

For many, it can be a challenge to think of artistic work as coherent – as something that must function as practice as well as business.

As part of their education, we can help the students to see and develop the connection between practice and business. For a company that is not deeply rooted in the artistic motivation is unlikely to be sustainable – and vice versa.
