Music you haven´t heard before

Teacher: Kresten Osgood

This course will deal with various currents in jazz and show where they come from and where they are heading.We will try to suggest a perspective on general education in jazz history and development by looking at questions such as: “What is the difference between Sonny Criss and Art Pepper? And why?”, “What is the significance Hampton Hawes had for the future piano trios?” etc.


PREREQUISITES

No subject specific prerequisites.


LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the module the student must at an advanced level:

  • Knowledge of selected areas of jazz history and development
  • Knowledge and understanding of various currents in jazz and the context they appear in

CONTENTS

We work with the following areas:

  • Major trends in jazz history and development
  • Comparison and perspective of music from different areas and time periods in jazz

TEACHING AND WORKING METHODS
  • Listening to music
  • Reflections on the music itself and its role and position in a jazz historical context
  • Discussion of music that the students bring

GROUP FORMATION

Group size, normally 5-8 students.


ASSESSMENT

Demonstrate knowledge of jazz history and development and understanding of various currents in jazz and the context they appear in during the course
