Textiles as Narrative

Objective

Textiles as Narrative is a collaboration between design student, Emilie Carlson from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts – Schools of Architecture, Design and Conservation and scenography student Franciska Alberta Zahle from The National School of Performing Arts. Through an interdisciplinary collaboration the students will create 15 costumes for the kids play ‘Snehvide og de syv fumlinger’ and an exhibition, where costumes, a process book and sketches will be presented.

Project Description

Textiles as narrative is an artistic collaboration in which the two students challenge each other’s skills in practice to free themselves from the usual methods and traditional stops in the design processes. By using the visual power inherent in textile designs and illustrations they will communicate the characters personalities and the narrative of the play. The characters become an integral part of textile development and the story will be expressed in both form and surface.

The students explain yourself about the project

“In this project interdisciplinarity is the focal point. We will create an unique visual experience for the viewer. A new world of images in which you can explore and find little secrets and stories. We open up a field of tension between our work as we both are interested in how we can use a surface in spatial constellations and movements. This we do to break with the flat print, and turn it into a 3D-experience. We work with the actual narrative in form and surface – it will be a synergy between our work and our process will never stop – where one stops, the other goes on.”

The costumes could be seen in the play ‘Snehvide og de syv fumlinger‘ from 4 to 27 July 2014 as part of Grønnegårds Theatre’s outdoor performances.
