Fixed Reference

Objective

Fixed Reference (working title Visual book of conversations) is an interdisciplinary artistic experiment by Mai Dybdal, student at the School of Design, KADK and Frederikke Dalum, student in scenography at the National Danish School of Performing Arts. Through the experiment, the two students want to study the various artistic methods and approaches to reproduction and document the artistic work in a visual book.

Description

Fixed Reference is an interdisciplinary collaboration on reproduction, inspiration and method. The project was finalized as a visual publication with the launch at Den Fries Boghandel October 12, 2016.

The book is a visual relay dealing with references, interpretations and paraphrases between 38 young artists. The artists contribute with their professional background to interpret and reproduce each other’s works from an assigned photo of one existing piece. Based on the photo the artists created a new artistic process as well as a new artistic work, which is documented visually in the publication. The publication aims at starting an artistic conversation about work process, inspiration and working methods.

The students themselves say about the project

“We are both in a student culture where digital search platforms often are the basis for our visual inspiration material. We want to turn those digital platforms off for a while and let the inspiration come from artists around us. We will therefore create an open space where inspiration material – which we otherwise would not have applied – can plant in one’s own inspiration archive. (…) With an artistic baton between different disciplines, we hope to open up new trends, partnerships and new ways of working with artistic and visual material.”
