Animisme & Objects

Animism & Objects seeks to find a way of working between the documentary director and the visual artist and their two mediums – documentary film and sculpture – that can guide the students towards a common expression.

Animism & Objects is a study of Siberian hunters’ particular object understanding derived from their natural religion, animism. With an expedition to the Siberian taiga the students William Wivel (The Danish Film School 1st year, Documentary Director) and Søren Rye (The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, 1st year) wants to investigate local hunters relationship to the “object” and put this in the context of a Western conception of art for an exhibition / presentation in Denmark with video and sculpture.

The exhibition space has not been determined yet, and the students are considering putting the show up somewhere, which is normally not an exhibition space, to avoid project being placed in a classical visual art frame. They examine, inter alia, the opportunity to work with the cinema as a platform for both film and sculptural objects. In addition to showcasing the work, the students will give a presentation on the interdisciplinary art and interdisciplinary process behind the project, organized in cooperation with CAKI.

The student about the project

The driving force of the project is to find a way of working where the two expressions, sculpture and video, will be brought into play together. Through the interdisciplinary approach, the students will test the possibilities of the film medium and sculpture as a common expression, so the project can encourage to new ways of working transmedial. With the interdisciplinary cooperation is a desire to think about the disciplines we take in use (sculpture and video) in an advanced framework.

The cross-media is a necessity for the project because it has to be documented on video how the sculptures / objects, “are alive” among hunters. The interdisciplinary then relates to the project’s shape and base. The work will include project development, research and preparations for the journey, camera tests, logging and editing of video material, installation in the exhibition space, script writing and more. A double role, where we let one party’s disciplines and ideas replace the other.
